Major Evening Events
Five events are presented from September to June. Formats include:
COMMENTARY & PERFORMANCE
Our signature format – a unique blend of commentary and performance, in which noted scholars, directors, and writers explore a theme, character, or play, as stellar actors perform scenes and speeches. Past participants have included Stephen Greenblatt, Simon Russell Beale, Harold Bloom, Kathleen Chalfant, David Scott Kastan, Trevor Nunn, F. Murray Abraham, David Strathairn and many others.
SHAKESPEARE IN PROGRESS
See Shakespeare through the eyes of leading actors and directors as they bring the rehearsal room onstage, providing a rare view of the theatrical process. Join us in December for this annual open rehearsal and discussion. This program is an ongoing collaboration with NYU’s Graduate Acting Program and has featured the work of Stephen Spinella, Kate Forbes, Elizabeth Marvel, Bill Camp, Michael Cumpsty and Steven Skybell.
CINEMATIC SHAKESPEARE
Experience and compare the work of great Shakespearean actors and filmmakers throughout the history of cinema – with commentary by stage and film critics, actors, and film historians.
Small Venue Events
These events offer members an opportunity to interact with actors, directors and scholars. Guests have included director and critic Robert Brustein, scholar James Shapiro, producer Jeffrey Horowitz, and actress Zoe Caldwell. Theses evenings also include the culminating events of Shakespeare Works (the Society's series of week-long residencies aimed at supporting the performance and production of Shakespeare in NYC). At the conclusion of the residency members are invited to an evening of readings and conversation with the cast, director and advisors.
Classes and Seminars
STUDY SEMINARS
The seminars offer members the opportunity to read and discuss Shakespeare’s plays in a relaxed and informal setting. The in-depth discussions of individual plays span eight weeks and provide the Shakespeare lover with an accessible guide to the richness and beauty of the greatest dramatist in the English language. Taught by Shakespeare scholar Ruth Carpenter.
SPEAK THE VERSE
A chance to experience Shakespeare’s language firsthand in these spirited classes taught by leading theater professionals. Learning the intricacies of Shakespeare’s verse gives the participants a unique understanding of how Shakespeare creates character, tone and meaning. Past teachers include Kristin Linklater, Roger Rees, Kate Forbes, Steven Skybell, Joseph Plummer and Barry Ingham.
