Internships

We are always looking for interns!

The Shakespeare Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the enjoyment, understanding, and appreciation of William Shakespeare's works through performance, commentary, and educational activities.  We believe the benefits of engaging Shakespeare's text personally and academically are immense and should evolve over a lifetime.

The Shakespeare Society invites college sophomores, juniors, and seniors or recent graduates interested in Arts Administration (including Development, Membership, Marketing/Press, etc.) to apply for part-time internships.  Administration interns work closely with the Directors, assisting with general office duties, fundraising work (i.e. grants and donor contributions), design projects, maintaining the website, event coordination, and Artistic programming initiatives.  On occasion, The Shakespeare Society has also had need for Education interns, who support our Education Director in the office, may assist in classrooms around New York City, and have the opportunity to work with our hugely successful Hunts Point Children's Shakespeare Ensemble.

Administration internships are available in Fall, Spring, and Summer sessions, and are unpaid; however, interns receive an honorary membership to The Shakespeare Society and free tickets to cultural events at a variety of venues.  The minimum time commitment is 10 hours per week, with some evenings.

Interested students should complete the application (below) and submit a resume, cover letter, and two references to Jackie Tralies, Artistic & Development Associate at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Intern Testimonials

"Interning with The Shakespeare Society allowed me to learn how a non-profit organization deals with day-to-day operations while also preparing for large events. From talks with actors and scholars to ballet performances, the Society showed how Shakespeare can be accessible to everyone. I loved being a part of that. Whether it was organizing grant applications or prepping for cultural events around the city, I always felt that I was a valuable member of the team. Since interns are given a lot of membership and fundraising duties, your interpersonal and writing skills grow, as well as your time management skills (not to mention your sense of direction and facility with the subway system). Seeing how many ways Shakespeare’s work can be adapted and discussed strengthened my resolve to become a Shakespearean, so I’m extremely grateful to The Society!" - Kristin, Adelphi University Alum & Catholic University Grad Student, Winter/Spring 2014

"Being an intern for the Shakespeare Society fueled my enthusiasm for non-profit work in a way that I had never expected. Although I was hired mainly to do graphic and web design, I also ended up working on projects for the development, education, and artistic departments. The variety in the work that I did there made each day interesting and challenging. Over the course of my internship I proudly watched events and fundraisers that I helped with come to fruition. I always felt like the staff members valued my time because they always explained the significance of these projects within the organization. Apart from the work that was done in the office, the opportunity to attend discussions with well-respected performers and scholars was invaluable. Working with the Shakespeare Society for six months opened the door to the multifaceted exploration of Shakespeare’s work that takes place in New York." - Meg, Fordham University, Summer/Fall 2013

"My internship at the Shakespeare Society allowed me to gain hands-on experience with a non-profit organization committed to preserving Shakespeare’s works. I learned about fundraising and outreach, how to write grant applications, gained web design skills, and had the opportunity to help out at various events. I loved learning from both the Shakespeare Society team and from guest lecturers at the organization’s events around the city. My internship at the Shakespeare Society taught me how Shakespeare’s writing continues to have life and meaning in New York City and around the world. I acquired invaluable skills that I have been able to apply to both my studies and subsequent internships." - Abigail, NYU Senior, Summer 2013

"I absolutely loved working with The Shakespeare Society. My time there allowed me to learn so much about the way a nonprofit works, from grant writing to programming. The general attitude in the office was always friendly and fun; I definitely felt like part of the team and not just a glorified office gopher. Interning with The Shakespeare Society also gave me a lot of skills for my résumé, such as working with FilemakerPro and Adobe Acrobat. As an intern, you’re given a lot of responsibility and trust, so coming to work is always interesting. Working with an arts- and education-based nonprofit was a great way to explore how to be involved in the arts without necessarily being a performer (the free membership didn’t hurt either.) I learned a lot, I feel that I accomplished a lot, and I hope I’ll get the chance to work with The Shakespeare Society again soon!" - Mollyhall, NYU Senior, Fall 2012
